TLES Updates - 7/20/20

GovDelivery 2 weeks 1 day ago

Hello Timber Lane Families,

I hope this News You Choose finds you all well.  We are eagerly planning for the 2020-2021 school year for our online and in-person student options.  As many of you know the survey for parent choice for the online or in-person option has now closed.  For those who did not respond to the survey the default plan is to schedule those students for in-person learning.  However at Timber Lane we are all about being extremely strategic and precise.  A small team of individuals are calling and texting our families so we have a head count for 100% of our students.

In order to best accommodate many of our students' academic and unique needs, we will be hand placing all students into all new classes for in-person learning.  All online classes have been created essentially by parent request, and when necessary we will work to strategically craft classes for the grade levels that may qualify for more than one online class.

Readjusting class placements may adjust the alpha designation for some of our students.  This will all take place in our best estimation during the first week in August, after we go through the motions for online staffing updates and online teacher allocations to be determined across the county. Once we have class placement updates we will communicate all of this information to all of our families.

Currently we have confirmed online or in-person choices for 503 families.

We are still waiting to confirm the choices for approximately 120 families

(many Head Start & Preschool students in addition to pockets of K-6 students).

Of the families who have already made their choice, 42% have chosen online; 58% have chosen in-person.

For our instructional staff, 40% prefer online and 60% chose in-person.

Take care and we will be in touch!

Ben Chiet

Principal

Yearbooks Are Here!

On Monday July 27th from 9am-4pm we will offer an additional pick-up day for all pre-ordered yearbooks.  Please ring the bell at Door #1 and a staff member (wearing PPE) will check you off the list and deliver a yearbook to you at the door.  All 6th grade yearbooks will be mailed to our rising 7th graders, so no need for pick-up. :)

Please wear a face-covering and follow social distancing guidelines as much as possible.

TLES Updates - Please Complete Your Return to School Option!

GovDelivery 3 weeks 1 day ago

Hello Timber Lane Families,

I hope this News You Choose finds you all well.  Last week was a week full of more details about what school will look like this fall both in the building as well as through distance learning.  Families have until July 15th to make their year-long decision for distance learning or in-person learning for their children.  Options once again are for parents to decide on Distance Learning (4 days live instruction with teachers & 1 day of independent activities) or In-Person Learning (2 days live instruction in the building and 3 days of independent activities).  If you change your decision once you have submitted your information from now until September 8th, please notify Principal Chiet as soon as possible.

Parents & Caregivers Please Respond Now!

Fall Learning Options – Enrollment Due 7/15/2020

Complete form on the website - www.fcps.edu/enroll2020

Back to school learning options for all students this Fall!

  • Full-time online instruction OR
  • Part-time in-person instruction (2 days per week) with social distancing in our school buildings.

REMINDERS

  • Make choice based on health and safety concerns.
  • Form requires student identification number and parent email address or phone number.
  • Enrollment form is accessible through mobile devices.
  • Translations of the form are available using the language selection option on the webpage, must use Chrome browser

NOTE: If you need help understanding this flyer, please call your school or the Parent Information Lines for assistance. English speakers can call the Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941.

What should a family do if they do not know their child’s Student ID number to fill out the school enrollment option form?

Parents should contact the school their child will be attending for help with obtaining their child’s Student ID number from the Student Information System (SIS). Schools should have a staff person available who can look up the Student ID number in SIS for the parent so that the parent can complete the school enrollment option form to meet the July 15th deadline.

Yearbooks Are Here!

On Wednesday July 15th from 9am-4pm yearbooks will be available for pick-up.

Return to Learn 2020 Updates

Here are some updates as well, just to keep you as informed as possible:

  • Schedule: The bell schedule of elementary, middle, and high school—anticipated July 13th
    • Alternating days support middle and high school scheduling needs.
    • Schools will schedule their own virtual classes and work with other schools as needed.
    • There will be a division-wide alpha split. At present, however the needs of some of our special education students and Level IV AAP students (to name a few) will drive us to make decisions regarding the days in which certain students report to school (if in-the-building learning is your option).  As soon as we determine that, we will communicate with those families.
    • Families with different last names will follow the schedule of the eldest child in the household.
    • Breakfast & Lunches will take place in the classroom
    • Students will not share any materials (pencils, books, math manipulatives, etc.)  Every child will operate under their own personal set of materials.
  • Communication: FCPS will continue to use multiple platforms, in multiple languages, to share information. Information has been pushed centrally from the county to school websites.  Please continue to check the FAQs
    • Enrollment Process: The first video explains step-by-step how to complete the enrollment form.
    • Spanish version of enrollment video: https://youtu.be/GLTvH4SHnlM
    • The second video provides a brief overview of what school will look like when in-person and virtual classes resume.
  • Weekly communication from the county will begin the week of July 20th.
  • Community Partnerships: The county is communicating with SACC and other community agencies about childcare. Information about SACC services will be forthcoming.
    • Professional development for regulated childcare providers and community-based organizations to support virtual and asynchronous instruction will take place before the start of school.
  • Facilities/Safety: Protocols and guidelines continue to be developed, including health screening questionnaires for students, staff, and visitors. A parent/guardian screening commitment form will be distributed (one time) prior to face-to-face instruction.
    • Additional information regarding student masks will be provided. All students above the age of 2 are required to wear a mask as of the latest communication with county officials. Please keep this in mind when making your decision. Consider having your children practice wearing a mask to help them acclimate.
    • 6 feet apart is the default in classrooms, with recent protocols allowing small group instruction when necessary to occur within 3 feet apart.
    • Plexiglass has been placed in our main office. Additional plexiglass has been requested but may not be offered for individual classrooms (due to cost and incredible demand).
    • Specials are being discussed as to whether they will support a push-in model, take place in classrooms, or be virtual. Transitions between classrooms are allowed, and will occur, if needed. Safety precautions and directives will be in place to support these transitions.
    • An isolation room will be created and supervised for any student exhibiting COVID19 symptoms, until parents are able to pick students up from school.  Communication protocols for the class and school in addition to procedures for identifying the need for staging a student in an isolation room will be determined by the health department.
  • Technology: Laptops have been provided for every TLES student PreK-6 and will continue to be available throughout the year for any new student or students who have not yet taken advantage of this accommodation.

TLES Return to School Visuals

Return to School Plan - Visuals

For students who report to school for the hybrid model, students will go through a full school day schedule 2 days per week.  Students will have live teaching 2 days per week followed by "independent study" 3x per week.  Students will not be meeting with their teachers 3x per week in this model.

On days students are not reporting to the building in the hybrid model, they will complete "independent study" assignments for 3 days per week.  This will consist of independent reading, a writing task, potentially 2 specials classes, math enrichment through an online digital tool, as well as reading enrichment through an online digital tool.  There will not be teacher interaction on the school days students do not report to school.  There will not be office hours offered either - as teachers will be either meeting with the other 50% of students who return to school or planning.  Intervention blocks will be reserved for students who fit the need for that criteria for an additional time period for intervention on Mondays.

Students who participate in full-time distance learning will interact with their teachers 4 days per week for live (synchronous) instruction.  The hours for live instruction are below.  Some students may be selected to take part in online intervention (synchronous) on Mondays, if they meet the criteria.  Through this model students will meet with teachers either 4 or 5 days per week.

TLES Return to School & Summer Enrichment

GovDelivery 1 month ago

Return to School Plan

As we prepare for the 2020-2021 school year, each family to tasked with the important decision of determining how school will look for your child in the fall. You should have received a survey from Dr. Brabrand asking if you would like to have your child come into the building 2 days per week, or learn online 4 days a week. This choice will be a yearlong commitment. Please note that responses are due by July 10, 2020. If  you do not respond, your choice will default to coming to school 2 days a week.

At Timber Lane we want to do everything we can to support you in making an informed decision. We encourage you to stay up to date by accessing the information on the Return to School Webpage

In addition, this Wednesday July 1st at 12:00PM I will offer a virtual Parent Coffee, where I will address some of the most commonly asked questions. In order to get to as many questions as possible in a fair and organized fashion, you are asked to submit your questions in advance using this Parent Coffee link.

Summer Enrichment Opportunity

In order to continue to learning through the summer FCPS and TLES are providing a variety of learning opportunities.

All students have access to skill practice through all digital resources used during the previous school year.  Students will need to enter their FCPS login credentials to access these resources. These digital activities will be available until Friday, July 31st.

Additionally, all students currently in grades K-6 should have receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide recommended practice activities for students to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content from next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year.

In addition to these resources, Timber Lane Elementary, Pine Spring Elementary and Graham Road Elementary have teamed up to provide some synchronous learning 4 days per week for 1 hour each day from July 6-31.  For families who signed up, we will be working together to provide your child  access to 2 Reading lesson and 2 Math lessons each week. If you signed up for this opportunity, your child should have received an email from their summer learning teacher in their Gmail account with details such as time, teacher and a secure link. If you need additional support please reach out to your child's summer school teacher.

Ben Chiet, director

Progress Reports (all grade levels)

Well Wishes To Departing Staff Members

What Factors Determine Class Placements At Timber Lane?

Thank You To Our 2019-2020 PTA Board Members!

Gracias a:

Yearbook Update/Actualización del Anuario (Year Book)

Dear Timber Lane Families,

As we close out the 2019-2020 school year, I want to say a special thank you to every one of you for your partnership this year. Although things ended unexpectedly, it was a wonderful school year and I am honored to be your principal! We couldn’t have yielded the success we had without the incredible learning on the part of our teachers, the flexibility and understanding of our parents, and the love of learning (by any means) by our Timber Lane Tigers.

In terms of our plans for the fall, the school board will be deliberating on proposed plans throughout June and hope to have a plan to communicate to staff and families by the end of the month. Currently, three approaches are being considered, you can read a little about each one here: FCPS Return to School: Fall 2020. As you can imagine, whatever approach is chosen will set in motion even more strategic planning at the school level to guarantee your children are safe and getting the instruction and challenges they deserve at Timber Lane.

By the end of the month, students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide recommended practice activities for students to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content from next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year.

As students access these activities from July 6 to July 31, they will also have the opportunity to join Timber Lane teachers for summer learning. In collaboration with teachers from Pine Spring Elementary and Graham Road Elementary, our teachers will use the summer workbooks as guides to plan additional live learning opportunities and hold office hours where students can ask questions and interact with teachers and other students their age. Our schools are working collaboratively this summer to provide all of our students an opportunity to learn and grow together. Any student interested in attending is welcome. We have previously sent out a survey to all of our families. If you were unable to complete that survey but are interested in taking part in this learning opportunity, please email bjchiet@fcps.edu.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer and I hope to see you all in our building this August.

Ben Chiet, Principal

Progress Reports (all grade levels)

Final progress reports will be sent home to families centrally from FCPS. You should expect to receive them a few weeks after school has finished as they are tentatively scheduled to be sent around June 25. As a reminder, there will be no grades for the fourth quarter; only final mark on the progress reports. Beginning June 16 at 6:00am, you can access the progress reports through your parent SIS account.

Well Wishes To Departing Staff Members

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish our cherished staff members the very best in their future endeavors. We have a number of retirements, out of state moves, changes in positions, and some folks pursuing opportunities outside of education. Staff and administration would like to share the following updates with you:

Retirements: Mary Wurl, Kristi Johnson, & Marlyne Tramble-Foster

Inter-&-Intra-State Moves: Sydney McKinney, Laura Wertheimer, Latowia Mason, Kelley Higgins

New Positions: Sue Culpepper, Christie He, Mike Gerber, Adair Grandchamp

New Opportunities (staff at TLES for one year only): Jenni Lent, Kait Dight, John Simpson, Pamela Goodwin, Gabby Payabyab, Emily Schauss, Ebony Buraimo

Thank you for your sincere dedication to the students of Timber Lane. Whether your time at Timber Lane was a short or long while, you have left an indelible impression on our hearts. To those who are starting in a new position, we are incredibly excited to support you in your new journey!

What Factors Determine Class Placements At Timber Lane?

We wanted to take the opportunity to discuss the many factors that go in to our class placements this upcoming school year. First of all we trust the thinking of our grade level teams (including counselors, ESOL, SPED, AART, and classroom teachers) who know our students best (second to you all) and who have worked to put students in the best setting. We are committed to creating classes that support academic growth for all students and are very well balanced considering the following factors:

  • Tier 1-3 academic levels for both Reading/Math
  • DRA levels (for forming leveled reading groups)
  • Social-emotional needs
  • English Language Proficiency levels
  • Students with receiving special education services
  • Students of various backgrounds and experiences
  • Advanced academic levels
  • Strengths of teachers
  • The benefit of student pairings or changes from current class make-up
  • Students with interrupted schooling
  • Previous years’ experiences

Again, we are committed to creating classes that will support growth for every student and strive to achieve a balance of all the above-mentioned factors.

Thank You To Our 2019-2020 PTA Board Members!

There will be some changes to next year’s PTA Board and we wanted to extend a huge thank you to this year’s 2019-2020 Board. In a year unlike any other we have had before; you all did a phenomenal job supporting the students and staff of Timber Lane. Thank you for all the time you put into helping to make our educational environment and opportunities for families a great one!

Thank you to:

Marnie Lewis, President

Meera Natarajan, Vice President

Angela Torpy, Secretary

Jeremy Jester, Treasurer

Molly Patton, Social Media & Communications

Laptop Update

As of just a few weeks ago, every family that could benefit from a laptop at home for Distance Learning was offered the opportunity to receive one. All students in PreK-6 can keep laptops through the summer. We plan to use them at home most likely in the fall. We encourage students to continue to access some great reading practice through some of our digital content providers, such as MyOn, and continue their work with some fun math practice on Dreambox. Students who have been accessing Imagine Learning or Lexia are encouraged to continue with those as well! Towards the end of the summer, we plan on collecting our sixth-grade laptops, but I hope they too will continue to use them for some daily reading and math practice!

Yearbook Update

Recently yearbooks arrived at Timber Lane! However, they arrived with another school’s cover. ☹ Luckily Lifetouch has agreed to reprint our order so we can honor the student artwork and the staff efforts that went into creating our spectacular cover! Please stay tuned for an announcement in the coming weeks about when those yearbooks will be made available. We will plan to mail yearbooks to sixth-grade students with promotion certificates; all other yearbooks will be made available for pick up outside our main lobby at a date that is still to be determined.

Timber Lane Elementary School Special Announcement!

GovDelivery 1 month 3 weeks ago

Dear Timber Lane Families,

Due to an increase in staffing this upcoming school year we are pleased to announce that Timber Lane Elementary has qualified for a second Assistant Principal.  A panel of Timber Lane staff members have been hard at work, helping us find the new addition to our administrative team.  We are thrilled to announce that our new Assistant Principal will be Shele Banford!  Shele Banford joins us from the Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, where she served Title I schools across the division as a Literacy Resource Teacher.  For the last two years, Mrs. Banford has supported schools throughout Fairfax County, including Timber Lane, through her position as a Literacy Resource Teacher.

Throughout the course of her career with Fairfax County Public Schools, she has served as a classroom teacher, interventionist, Literacy Collaborative coach, and Literacy Collaborative District Trainer. She holds a Master of Science in Reading and Literacy from Capella University and earned her Administration and Supervision endorsement from University of Virginia.  Mrs. Banford is excited to join the team at Timber Lane Elementary and looks forward to serving the community through her passion for teaching and learning.

Please join us in welcoming Shele Banford as our new Assistant Principal!
