Language Arts

What We Learned This Past Month:

We have been learning about nonfiction texts and narrative nonfiction. Students have been reading and writing about topics of their choice and trying to learn skills like main idea and details, compare and contrast, and context clues. Ask your student what they are writing about for their nonfiction essay!

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

We will continue to learn about reading and writing nonfiction, as well as narrative nonfiction. After this unit, we will move into historical fiction where students will think about history and different events that could have happened in different time periods.

Math

What We Learned This Past Month:

We have been learning multiplication and division this past month. Students have been challenged to solve multiplication and division word problems, as well as multi-digit multiplication and division. Students have started memorizing their multiplication facts through playing games.

After multiplication and division, we will move into our unit on decimals!

What We Learned This Past Month:

We finished up our ecosystem unit and are preparing for our next science unit which will be Ecosystems part 2! Ask your student what they can do to help protect our ecosystem.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

Our first two science units are about the ecosystem and how people and animals interact and how we need to work together to make sure our ecosystems remain in balance.

Social Studies

What We Learned This Past Month:

We have learned how Jamestown began and the positives and negatives of starting a colony in the new world. Students have thought about what the colonists did to survive and how they treated different groups of people in the new world.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

We will continue to learn about the history of Virginia starting with Colonial Virginia. The student will describe how the daily life and culture of the Native peoples, Europeans, and Africans varied and reflected diversity and resilience. We  will use a critical lens to understand the role of slavery on the growth of the colonial economy.  We will explain the reasons for the relocation of Virginia’s capital from Jamestown to Williamsburg and describe how money, barter, and credit were used in colonial Virginia.
