Language Arts

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • Our kindergarteners have been learning early reading behaviors such as one-to-one match, directionality, phonological skills, and locating known/unknown words in text to monitor their reading. We have been engaging in various texts to learn about patterns in books.

  • Students have been learning to apply concepts about print (adding letters, words, sentences and making sure the words match the picture) to their own writing during independent drawing/writing time.

  • Students have been working on building letter-sound relationships and phonemic awareness skills through engaging in meaningful small group lessons and independent activities.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

  • We will begin our non-fiction unit in reading and writing. Students will continue to use early reading behaviors as they explore and engage in various non-fiction texts.

  • Students will begin creating “How-To” books in writing. Students will learn to write and draw about a single topic as well as teach and learn new information through sharing their books.

  • Students will continue working on building letter-sound relationships and phonemic awareness skills through engaging in meaningful small group lessons and independent activities.

Math

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • Our mathematicians have been learning all about patterns. Students learned to identify, create, extend, and transfer repeating patterns found in objects, movement, and sound.

  • Students have also engaged in consistent number sense routines and small group activities to build fluency counting quantities, identifying numbers, and writing numerals up to 20.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

  • Students will work towards fluency with counting sets, making sets, comparing sets, ordering sets, and writing numerals up to 20. Students will also continue solidifying oral counting forward to 31 and backward from 10, while becoming fluent with saying the number after a given number.
