Reminders

  • Please have your child leave their smart watch at home or in their backpack before coming to school.
  • Students need to read for 15-20 minutes every day at home.
  • Encourage students to practice their multiplication facts each day for 10 minutes.

Attendance

Attendance is extremely important for our students. Students should come to school as much as possible. Our updated attendance form not only permits you to report and all day absence but also a late arrival or early dismissal. Remember to submit absences:

When reporting a student's absence, please be specific about the reason why your child will not be attending school today.

Important Dates

  • February 20 President’s Day - No School for Students

Language Arts

What we learned this month:

This month we worked on poetry:

  • Students are learning about how poems are constructed, how poets use figurative language and the true meaning of poems.
  • Students are also working in small groups on specific spelling patterns and comprehension strategies.

What will be learning next month:

Next month we will be focusing on critical literacy and persuasive writing.

  • Students will use their critical brains to determine the true meaning of an author’s work, whether that be with advertisements or opinion articles.
  • Students will also have the opportunity to write persuasive pieces about things that matter to them.

Math

What we learned this month:

  • Students have been working on understanding decimals, decimal place value, and will begin computation of decimals shortly!
  • Students are beginning to show understanding of what a decimal is and how they are used in the real world.

What we will be learning next month:

Our next  unit will be: Multiplication and Division Part 2!

  • Students will be multiplying and dividing larger numbers within word problems.
  • It is very important to keep practicing those multiplication facts nightly!

Advanced Math

What we learned this month:

  • Students have applied their knowledge of decimals and whole number computation to our unit on adding and subtracting decimals.
  • Now, we are working on solving word problems involving decimal computation.

What we will be learning next month:

Next up, adding and subtracting fractions!

  • Students will apply their knowledge of fraction and decimal equivalencies to solve practical problems that involve both single and multiple steps.
  • Students will also use models in order to learn how to multiply a proper fraction by a whole number to 12.

Science

This month we will be focusing on the ocean, coastal communities, and how the two impact each other. Students started the unit by discovering what lies underneath the ocean and will build models of the ocean. We will end the unit with showing how the ocean can impact coastal communities and how we can help coastal communities survive and thrive.

Social Studies

We finished the Revolutionary War and will continue Virginia history by talking about the Constitution and movement west. We will then get into the Civil War and impact the war has on various groups in Virginia.
