Important Dates & Reminders

 

  • March 31: End of Quarter, 2 Hour Early Release 
  • April 1: Teacher Workday / No School for Students 
  • April 4 - 8: Spring Break / No School

Language Arts

What We Learned This Past Month:

Reading

  • We learned how to explain and clarify our ideas about a story 
  • We learned that contributing, listening and responding are equally important roles in a conversation
  • We learned how to understand another person’s idea about the text

Writing

  • We drew from familiar characters and personal situations to create our own stories
  • We used what we know about narrative writing to stretch out the conflict and resolution
  • We learned to understand the structure of a narrative story to include a character, setting, problem and solution

What We Will Be Learning Next Month: 

Reading

  • We will notice and connect word parts to solve multi-syllabic words
  • We will learn to adjust our reading as we notice sentence variety

Writing

  • We will ask questions about a line of interest 
  • We will use close observation to learn new information and share this information through our research unit
  • We will collaborate and discuss our observations and questions

 

Math

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • We continued to practice how to solve a story problem within 10 using any strategy 
  • We continued to build automaticity/fluency with facts to 10
  • We learned how to explain the way they solved the problem

What We Will Be Learning Next Month: 

  • We will learn to share a whole equally with two or four shares
  • We will learn how to represent fair shares pictorially
  • We will learn how to describe shares as equal pieces of parts of the whole 
  • We will learn to represent halves and fourths of a whole 
  • We will name fractions represented by drawings or concrete materials for halves and fourths

 

Science

What We Learned This Past Month: 

  • We studied animal homes and characteristics
  • We studied the plant life cycle from seed to plant 
  • We learned what a plant needs to survive

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

  • We will continue studying plants, their needs and their life cycle

 

Social Studies

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • We learned about the first Virginians and the settlement of Jamestown
  • We learned how to save and spend money responsibly 
  • We learned about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and President’s Day

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

  • We will revisit geography and study where people live and how this affects their way of life 
  • We will learn that geographic features may impact daily life for people around the world (food, shelter, clothing)
  • We will complete our Family Life Education unit 
    • Students will describe a community as people living and working together and will understand that family members make up a type of community
    • Students will identify responsibilities of different family members
    • Students will identify physical affection as an expression of friendship, celebration and a loving family 
    • Students will identify strategies to respond to inappropriate behavior from family members, neighbors, strangers and others
