Language Arts

What We Learned This Past Month:

We have been hard at work analyzing different types of passages and answering questions. We have practiced reading nonfiction, fiction, poems and flyers / advertisements. We also have been practicing our word work skills identifying synonyms, antonyms, homophones, facts and opinions. We are ready to do our best on our upcoming SOLs! Wish us luck!

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

Our next unit is persuasive writing and our book club unit. For Writing we will explore different types of reviews and write our own review about a product, place, book or movie! Each class has picked a chapter book to read to the whole class. We are excited to get this started after our Reading SOL is finished! Students are also participating in small book clubs with others. They will be working on speaking when it is their turn to talk and listening to others. Please talk to your child about what they are reading in class!

Math

What We Learned This Past Month:

This month we have learned about probability and graphing. Students connected the concepts of probability and data statistics. Students studied bar graphs and line graphs, making comparisons between data displayed in these different forms. They determined the probability of events and represented probability as a numerical value on a number line.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

We are now learning about telling time to the hour and minute on digital and analog clocks, and learning about elapsed times. We are also learning about measurement. Students are exploring measuring various attributes using both the U.S. Customary system and the metric system. They will explore equivalent measurements within the U.S. Customary system as well as solve problems involving measurement.

Advanced Math

We learned about the effects of segregation and "Jim Crow" on life in Virginia for American Indians, whites, and African Americans, analyzing the enduring legacy of racial discrimination on life in Virginia today. We also examined Virginia's economic development and the importance of railroads, new industries, and the growth of cities.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
