November 2022 4th Grade Newsletter
Reminders
- Students can bring 1 healthy snack to school each day that can be eaten in about 5 minutes.
- Teachers use Talking Points to message parents. Please check your Talking Points daily.
- Students need to read for 15-20 minutes each night at home and talk about what they read.
- This month, we will be completing the Bullying Prevention Unit during our SecondStep lessons

Language Arts
What we learned this month:
- This month, students focused on character traits and made inferences based on what the characters said, did, and thought.
- Students finished writing their Personal Essays and should be very proud of their hard work!
- We also started our nonfiction unit.
- Students began to identify nonfiction text structures such as Main Idea and Details, Cause and Effect, and Compare and Contrast.
What will be learning next month:
- Next up, students will be writing their very own nonfiction Feature Articles!
- They have chosen their topics and are excited to begin writing!
Math
What we learned this month:
- The students worked very hard on adding and subtracting large numbers and reading match story problems.
- After that, they worked on their fraction knowledge by ordering fractions, finding equivalent fractions, and using fractions to show fair share.
What we will be learning next month:
- Next up, the students will be working on multiplication and division.
- ALL STUDENTS should spend about 10 minutes each night working on their multiplication facts.
Advanced Math
What we learned this month:
- This month, students dove into our first decimals unit!
- They explored decimal and fraction equivalencies, learned to order and compare fractions and decimals, and tackled many fun math tasks with their partners!
What we will be learning next month:
- Coming up, students will be working on whole number computation.
- Students will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve multi-step word problems.
Science
Our first science unit was all about ecosystems!
- Students learned about Virginia's natural resources and how humans rely on those resources
- Students had fun creating a model of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed to help learn about the importance of maintaining a clean watershed
- Finally, students explored the importance of plants and animals to our ecosystem
Social Studies
Students completed their first unit on Virginia's geography * Virginia's Native People.
