Reading and Writing

We have been working to build our routines in both reading and writing. We have been building up our stamina, learning to read and write for longer periods of time. In reading we also have been learning how to use evidence from the text to support our ideas and form  theories about characters. In writing we have been writing memoirs, using a combination of narrative and expository writing techniques to develop our messages.

Math

We finished our first math unit looking at fractions, decimals, fractions and percentages and finding equivalencies. We also determined the unit rate of a proportional relationship and use it to find a missing value in a ratio table. During independent math workshop, students worked hard to great math review games to help their classmates learn about fractions, decimals, fractions and percentages! Our next unit will be on solving single-step & multi-step problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division of fractions and mixed numbers and solve multi-step problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals.

Advanced Math

We have completed unit 1 on rational number systems and are working on unit 2 which includes proportional reasoning and linear relationships. Proportional reasoning has been identified as a cornerstone of algebra and involves thinking about relationships and making comparisons of quantities or values. Proportional reasoning has many practical, real-world applications in which you can support your student, such as comparing unit rates at the grocery store to find which item is a better buy, calculating tax, tip or discounts, creating blueprints or scale drawings, and adjusting recipes or concentration of mixtures and solutions.

Social Studies

We started off the year learning about how to be a global and digital citizen. We also analyzed different forms of primary and secondary resources to help us learn about events of the past. We have also started our geography unit were we will learn about how where people live affects their lives, how geographical features may impact daily life for people around the world (food, clothing, shelter) and how geography has influenced the course of events in United States History.

Science

Our students have been learning all about our solar system! They learned about the different  planets and their relative positions from the sun, explained how the cycles of moon, tides, seasons and day and night occur and compared  the ideas of Ptolemy, Aristotle, Copernicus, and Galileo. We shared our new knowledge about our solar system by creating travel brochure about different planets, find your student’s brochure on Schoology!
