Learning Targets
Reading
Our students have been learning how to build a community together as readers - we have been exploring books, engaging in thoughtful discussions about stories, and developing our identities as readers. This week, we will begin to learn more about print through storybooks. Students will work on fundamental early reading behaviors and interact with various books to develop an understanding of how print works. We have also been learning about the letters in our names as well as our classmate’s names! We learned to identify the differences between capital and lowercase letters, as well as syllables and rhyming words. Students will continue to build their alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness through meaningful small group activities and interactive whole group lessons.
Writing
Our students have been learning how to build a community together as writers - we have been exploring various writing tools, diving into the writing process, and sharing our writing and pictures to communicate our ideas. In October, we will continue to learn how to communicate meaning through drawings and words. Additionally, our writers will work on their oral storytelling skills with their peers and begin learning about adding labels, letters, and words to their pictures.
Math
In math, we have been discussing math workshop routines, expectations, and guidelines. Students are always encouraged to take mathematical risks and engage in mathematical discourse with teachers as well as their peers. We finished our sorting by attributes unit and we will begin our new unit on counting and numbers this week. Our kindergarten mathematicians will work towards fluency with counting sets, making sets, comparing sets, and writing numerals up to 10. Also, students will practice oral counting forward to 20 and backward from 10.
Science
Our scientists have been learning about the 5 senses and how our bodies can help us learn! This week, students will begin exploring ants and their life cycle through our class ant farm.
Social Studies
Our students have been learning about being a good citizen in and out of the classroom through creating classroom rules and discussing schoolwide rules. This week, we will continue to learn about good citizenship, making good choices, and the difference between needs and wants (Economics).
