Our preschool playground is changing! Crews from Fairfax County are removing the mulch. It will be replaced with a rubberized surface. While we wait for the changes to take place we are enjoying outdoor play in the Timber Lane courtyard. The children are happily playing with giant waffle blocks, balls, tunnels, and lots and lots of bubbles!
Important Dates & Reminders:
- Oct 11 - Indigenous People’s Day, No School for Students
- Oct 29 - End of 1st Quarter, 2 hour release (no Afternoon Preschool class)
At Home Practice
- Parents have access to resources from Second Step, the Social Emotional curriculum that we’ll be using this year. Materials are in English and Spanish.

What We Are Learning
Theme
All About Me, Seasonal Changes, Pumpkins
Outcomes (may vary by classroom):
- Identify body parts and their function
- Identify self in the mirror/pictures (as appropriate)
- Learn/use personal pronouns (e.g. I, me, my)
- Learn/begin to identify feelings in facial expressions/pictures
- Begin to communicate what they see, hear, feel, taste, touch (accommodations made as appropriate)
- Make noticings about the weather and changes in the environment
- Learn awareness of their body in space through movement activities
- Continue to follow Listening Rules and learn character traits through Second Step
Sample Activities (may vary by classroom):
- Continue to learn and practice how to use our senses and body parts (e.g. hands are for high fives, pressing buttons)
- Picture recognition activities and matching/sorting activities with body parts and also apples versus pumpkins
- Mindfulness activities including breathing exercises (e.g. Hoberman sphere, Balloon breath, Drain breath)
- Hands on activities with pumpkins using our senses - touch, smell, see, hear, taste
- Activities related to the weather/nature (e.g. nature walk, clothing match up, leaf hunt)
- Art activities using items found outside (e.g. leaf rubbing, fall collage)
