Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month
We worked on building our reading and writing stamina, practiced having conversations about our reading and writing, and established our routines for Word Study. We reviewed skills taught last year (blends, silent-e word pattern, and vowel pairs).
Students began learning about being a super communicator. This is a yearlong journey that follows the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate Framework. We can’t wait to see the growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year! They were also introduced to our quarterly concept of relationships.
Students learned the structure of writing workshop and partnered up with classmates to help edit each other’s work.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month
Students will continue to learn about being a good communicator and gain a new perspective on what relationships mean.
Students will learn about features of nonfiction texts. This will go nicely with our writing unit: All About Books and our ladybug science unit. Students will read and analyze a variety of nonfiction texts.
Students will choose a topic to write about that they know many facts about. All About Books are exciting for students to write since they have a choice in topic!
Math
What We Learned This Past Month
We completed our first unit: Data, Time, and Temperature. Students reviewed how to collect, create and analyze data in both bar graphs and pictographs. When telling time, students expanded on their knowledge from last year and are working on telling time to the nearest minute. Students also learned how to tell the temperature to the nearest degree.
We began our measurement unit. Students learned the different units of measurement, became familiar with the metric system, and began practicing using a ruler in inches and centimeters.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month
We will continue our Measurement unit and begin the first part of our Addition and Subtraction unit. Students will read, write, and identify the place and value of four-digit numbers, round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, compare and order numbers 999 and less, and so much more!
Advanced Math
What We Learned This Past Month
We reviewed math workshop expectations and routines and started with a unit on data. Students reviewed how to collect, create and analyze data in both bar graphs and pictographs. When telling time, students expanded on their knowledge from last year and are working on telling time to the nearest minute.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month
Continue our measurement unit as well as start our unit of Addition and Subtraction (Part 1): Students will learn solving single step and multi-step problems, identifying place value positions of four digit numbers, comparing, contrasting, and ordering numbers, and rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.
Later on we will start Unit 2: Multiplication and Division (Part 1). Students will learn how to represent multiplication and division problems using a variety of strategies and models.
