Welcome back to school 3rd grade families!  The 3rd grade team wants to welcome you and your students to our classes and Timber Lane. We are so excited to work with your wonderful, caring students this year.  We are already seeing how caring and committed our students and families are to learning. Please keep in touch with your teachers to ask questions, get more information or just check in.  We look forward to being your partners in learning this year.

  • Please send an extra mask and a water bottle with your child every day.

What Are We Learning?

Reading

Unit 1: We just wrapped up our first Reading Unit in 3rd grade. Students learned and practiced reading workshop routines to become a community of readers.  Students practiced creating a perfect reading spot, choosing high interest books and practiced asking and answering questions about a text. 

Unit 2: Fiction Stories Understand that characters are the heart of fiction and that interpreting their journey allows the reader to analyze texts and life.  We will discuss character feelings, decisions and actions.

Writing

Unit 1 August 23- September 24: Understand that writers do their best work when they write what they know, care about, and want to share with others.  Understand that writing is a challenging process in which writers make decisions about topic, form, craft, and process.  

Unit 2 begins September 27: We will be learning about and writing our own Realistic fiction stories.  Students will learn that in fiction, the relationship between conflict and resolution communicates the deeper meaning of the piece.

Math

Unit 1 through September 24: MTH.3.1.a Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a four-digit whole number, with and without models. (PRS 1) Round whole numbers, 999 or less, to the nearest ten and hundred. (PRS 1) Compare and order whole numbers, each 999 or less. (PRS 1) Estimate and determine the sum or difference of two whole numbers. (PRS 2)  Create and solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving sums or differences of two whole numbers, each 999 or less. (PRS 2) Create equations to represent equivalent mathematical relationships. (RPS 6)  

Unit 2  begins September 27:  Multiplication & Division Part 1  Represent multiplication and division through 10 × 10, using a variety of approaches and models. (PRS 2) Create and solve single-step practical problems that involve multiplication and division through 10 x 10. (PRS 2)  Identify, describe, create, and extend patterns found in objects, pictures, numbers and tables. (PRS 6) Create equations to represent equivalent mathematical relationships. (PRS 6)

Science

Unit 1 Ladybugs began on September 13: Students will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations (PRS-1) Investigate and understand that adaptations allow animals to satisfy life needs and respond to the environment. (PRS-3) Investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic and terrestrial food chains. (PRS-3) Investigate and understand that ecosystems support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources. (PRS-3)

Social Studies

Unit 1 through Sept. 10:  The student learned the responsibilities of a good citizen, with emphasis on:. Respecting and protecting the rights and property of others.. Taking part in a voting process when making classroom decisions. Describing actions that can improve the school and community. Demonstrating self-discipline and self-reliance. Practicing honesty and trustworthiness. Explaining the purpose of rules.
