September in Review
What a great start to school we have had in first grade! These first few weeks of school, we focused on learning classroom routines, procedures, and building our classroom community. We also learned:
- How to build good reading habits and stamina
- How to read with a buddy
- How to respond to a writing prompt with pictures and words and write the sounds we hear
- How to be a mathematician that can count and write numbers 0-30, and notice patterns in counting
- How to use a calendar
- How to be a good citizen
What Are We Learning in October?
Reading & Writing
In reading, students will learn about print through characters. We will practice using what we know about letters and sounds when coming across a tricky word within a book. Students will make connections to the text and character. We will practice reading the words smoothly to boost fluency and comprehension.
In writing, we will continue to practice solving tricky words, by sounding out the word slowly and writing the sounds we hear. This will be demonstrated within our personal narratives unit. Within this unit, students will focus on producing a “small moment” story.
Math
In math, students will create and solve single-step story and picture problems using addition and subtraction within 10. We will continue to develop fluency with part-whole relationships for numbers up to 10. Students will work to develop an understanding of equality using the equal sign.
Science & Social Studies
Students will learn about living things and their basic needs to survive. We will learn how human actions affect the world around us, and how we can responsibly utilize natural resources through conservation.
