1st Grade Newsletter
Hello first grade families! In this newsletter, you will find all the wonderful things your learner has been studying this past month. We are looking forward to another fun-filled month in November!

Reminders
- Please ensure your child brings a water bottle, extra mask and change of clothes to school each day.
Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month:
Reading
- We learned what characters are and what they are feeling
- We practiced making connections to characters within the text
- We learned how to monitor our reading, asking ourselves if it looks right, sounds right and makes sense by using clues in text and picture
Writing
- We learned what a personal narrative is, and translated this understanding into the production of our own small moment stories
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Reading
- We will continue to practice monitoring, self-correcting and confirming using multiple sources of information while reading
- We will use word parts to solve new words
- We will notice punctuation and dialogue to reflect meaning through phrasing
Writing
- We will learn how to write “All About” and “How To” books
Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We learned to decompose and compose numbers within 10 (different combinations that make numbers within 10)
- We are learning to solve everyday math story problems (with or without numbers)
- We learned that the equal sign means balance, and “is the same” using different kinds of scales
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will learn about geometric shapes in the environment
- We will sort shapes by their attributes/characteristics
- We will compare and contrast geometric shapes
Science
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We learned how to be a scientist using our five senses
- We explored and learned about the weather
- We practiced classifying objects and animals based on their similar characteristics
- We learned about the different structures of a tree
- We learned the different structures of a plant and studied the life cycle of a plant
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will learn about fall changes and the effects it has on plants, animals and people
- We will learn how forces between objects affect motion
- We will learn how motion and sound are related
Social Studies
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We continued to practice self control and how to be a kind and caring classmate
- We learned how to appropriately use our hands in school
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will learn how to apply the traits of a good citizen by valuing honesty and truthfulness in ourselves and others.
- We will learn about the importance of voting and participating in classroom decision making.
