We’re so thankful to have had another great month in second grade!

Important Dates

  • December 20 - 31 - Winter Break, no school. We will see you back on January 3rd!

 

Reminders

  • Check in with your student’s teacher about any upcoming Winter special events.
  • Make sure your child comes to school with a snack, water bottle, and an extra mask every day. 
  • Contact the attendance office if there is a change to your child’s schedule.

 

Language Arts

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • We have been working hard on our non-fiction unit.  Students are learning to ask and answer questions as they are reading and identify the main idea of the text.
  • We have been writing “All About” books.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month: 

  • We will be starting our unit on Poetry. Students will be learning how to discover the types of poems they enjoy as well as what they think the poem means.
  • We will also start writing poems.
  • Students will continue to work on their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills during whole group and small group instruction.  

 

Math

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • We have been learning to estimate and measure length to the nearest inch and estimate and measure weight to the nearest pound.
  • We have begun our next Addition and Subtraction unit. Students have been determining and estimating sums and differences. We are working on creating and solving two step and single step problems.

What We Will Be Learning Next Month: 

  • We will continue our Addition and Subtraction unit.
  • Students will continue to practice equality through the use of the equal (=) and not equal (≠) symbol.

 

Science

What We Will Be Learning Next Month:

We are looking forward to our unit on weather after the Winter Break.

 

Social Studies

What We Learned This Past Month:

  • We have been learning all about the Powhatan and the Lakota Indians.
  • We had an amazing field trip to Huntley Meadows where we learned even more about the Powhatan!

What We Will Be Learning Next Month: 

  • We will continue our learning of Native Americans by beginning our unit on the Pueblo Indians.  Students will compare the lives and contributions of American Indian cultures of the past and present.
  • Students will describe the relationship between the geography, climate, environment, and culture of the Pueblo.
