Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month:
Reading
We learned to identify the theme of a poem
We practiced reading and rereading familiar stories and poems with fluency, accurate and meaningful expression
We learned how to use word parts we know to solve tricky words
Writing
We continued to practice writing poems to describe things, share feelings, or share something we love
We continued to use tools rhythm, repetition, line-breaks, sensory words) to express feelings and experiences through poetry
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Reading
We will learn to explain and clarify our ideas about a story
We will learn that contributing, listening and responding are equally important roles in a conversation
We will work to understand another person’s idea about the text
Writing
Writers draw from familiar characters and personal situations to create their stories
Writers use what they know about narrative writing to stretch out the conflict and resolution
Writers can understand the structure of a narrative story to include a character, setting, problem and solution
Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
We began to learn how to group a collection of up to 110 objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding numeral to develop an understanding of place value
We practiced using the words greater than, less than or equal to
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
We will continue practicing how to solve a story problem within 10 using any strategy
We will build automaticity/fluency with facts to 10
We will learn how to explain the way they solved the problem
Science
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
We will study animal homes and characteristics
We will study the plant life cycle from seed to plant
We will learn what a plant needs to survive
Social Studies
What We Learned This Past Month:
We will learn about New Year traditions and make new year resolutions
We will learn about maps and globes, and how they help us
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
We will learn about the first Virginians and the settlement of Jamestown
We will learn how to save and spend money responsibly
We will learn about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and President’s Day
