Important Dates & Reminders
- Student early release for the end of Quarter 3, Thursday March 31st at 1:30pm.
- Teacher Workday Friday April 1, 2022, no school for students.
- Math SOL - April 28-29
- Reading SOL - May 11-12
Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month:
We are finishing up our Content Area Research Projects! Each student chose a topic and went through the full research cycle. Students asked questions, took notes, revised their thinking, chose subtopics, and are producing a poster to show all their learning. Students will bring home their posters before Spring Break.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
We are moving into Functional Format (reading menus, directions, recipes, etc.) and test preparation for the SOL. We are working with students on slowing down their reading and understanding the texts they read. We are also teaching the students that the SOLs are not something to stress or worry about. The reading SOL is on April 28-29.
Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
We are just finishing up Fractions Part 2. Students have learned how to add fractions with like and unlike denominators and to simplify their answers. Students have focused on using drawings to find equivalent fractions and simplifying.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
We will be moving into Measurement, Data, and Probability after Spring Break and start to review for the SOL. The math SOL is on May 11-12.
Advanced Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
We are finishing up Measurement! Students have learned how to measure and convert units to determine the mass, volume, and length of objects. Students have learned how to calculate elapsed time, area and perimeter of rectangles, and will learn how to calculate the area of a triangle!
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Students will be learning geometry as they also review for the upcoming SOL!
Science
What We Learned This Past Month:
3rd Quarter’s Science focus is Oceans. Students will learn about how pollution will affect our oceans, organisms, how humans interact with one another & with the nonliving components in the ecosystem, understand that the ocean environment has characteristics and that Virginia has important natural resources.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Our next Science unit is Solar System in Quarter 4.
Social Studies
What We Learned This Past Month:
We are learning about the Civil War and VIrginia's involvement in the war. We are exploring the ideas between liberty and slavery and abolisitionists such as Harriot Tubman. The students will learn about battles that happened in Virginia and how the outcome led to unified states and emancipation, but segregation, as well.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Quarters 3 & 4: Reconstruction and Segregation
We will be learning about the impact of Reconstruction on life in Virginia, focusing on the expanded rights of African Americans and the impact on Virginia's government (PRS1)
🌎VS.8.b The student will Construct an understanding of the effects of segregation and "Jim Crow" on life in Virginia for American Indians, whites, and African Americans, analyzing the enduring legacy of racial discrimination on life in Virginia today (PRS 1)
🌎 VS.8.c The student will Examine Virginia's economic development and the importance of railroads, new industries, and the growth of cities (PRS 4)
