Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month:
Reading
- We noticed and connected word parts to solve multi-syllabic words
- We learned to adjust our reading as we notice sentence variety
Writing
- We learned how to ask questions about a line of interest (animal)
- We used close observation to learn new information and share this information through our research unit
- We learned how to collaborate and discuss our observations and questions
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Reading
- We will explore perspectives of characters that are both present and absent in the story
- Readers will explore advantages and disadvantages of characters
- Readers will learn to decide whether or not they accept the message of a story
Writing
- We will study other writers and illustrators and explore craft techniques
- We will talk about what we are doing as a writer
- We will provide an audience by responding to each other’s work
Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We learned to share a whole equally with two or four shares
- We learned how to represent fair shares pictorially
- We learned how to describe shares as equal pieces of parts of the whole
- We practiced representing halves and fourths of a whole
- We named fractions represented by drawings or concrete materials for halves and fourths
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will begin our Data Unit and learn how to:
- Organize and collect data
- Collect data to make an object graph
- Collect data to make a picture graph
- Analyze graphs
- We will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 10
- We will create and solve single-step story problems using addition and subtraction within 20
- We will learn how to demonstrate an understanding of equality through the use of the equal symbol
Science
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We continued studying plants, their needs and their life cycle
- We planted seeds in our school garden
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will identify materials that can be reduced, reused, recycled or repurposed
- We will learn how to explain why it is important to dispose of trash properly
- We will create strategies to keep the environment healthy
Social Studies
What We Learned This Past Month:
- We studied where people live and how this affects their way of life
- We learned that geographic features may impact daily life for people around the world (food, shelter, clothing)
- We completed our Family Life Education unit
- Students will describe a community as people living and working together and will understand that family members make up a type of community
- Students will identify responsibilities of different family members
- Students will identify physical affection as an expression of friendship, celebration and a loving family
- Students will identify strategies to respond to inappropriate behavior from family members, neighbors, strangers and others
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- We will learn about bus, car and pedestrian and bike safety
- We will review playground routines and rules
- We will identify safety guidelines for fire safety, water safety and internet safety
