Kindergarten Newsletter
Hello families! Our kindergarteners have been working hard this month to be good students and friends. We are thankful for our students and for your support!
Important Dates & Reminders
- May 30 - Memorial Day, No school
- Please pack an extra set of clothes and underwear in your child’s backpack.
- Please pack a water bottle labeled with your child’s name.
- Please pack a healthy snack labeled with your child’s name.
Language Arts
What We Learned This Past Month:
- Students continued working on building letter-sound relationships and phonemic awareness skills through engaging in meaningful small group lessons and independent reading and writing activities.
- Students continued to learn how to monitor all aspects of reading to engage in and understand texts as a whole. Students continued to solve predictable decodable words using letter/sound relationships. They also continued / began reading simple phrases.
- Students engaged and learned about the research process. They learned to ask questions about a line of interest, use observation to learn about new information, and collaborate / discuss their observations and questions with their peers.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- Students will continue working on building letter-sound relationships and phonemic awareness skills through engaging in meaningful small group lessons and independent reading and writing activities.
- Students will continue to learn how to monitor all aspects of reading to engage in and understand texts as a whole. Students will solve predictable decodable words using letter/sound relationships. They will also continue / begin reading simple phrases.
- Students will begin learning about persuasive writing. Students will learn to communicate opinions or ideas on topics they feel strongly about to share their perspectives and provide reasons or evidence to support their opinions orally and through writing.
- Students will learn to explain their ideas about a text and actively engage in conversation with others about text.
Math
What We Learned This Past Month:
- Students continued to work on their number sense skills (counting / writing quantities, composing / decomposing).
- Students continued to engage in counting collection groups to reinforce orally counting quantities and writing numbers 0-100.
- Students learned to identify and learn about the quantities of a penny, nickel, dime, and a quarter.
- Students learned to identify, describe, and compare plane geometric figures.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
- Students will continue to work on their number sense skills (counting / writing quantities, composing / decomposing).
- Students will continue to engage in counting collection groups to reinforce orally counting quantities and writing numbers 0-100.
- Students will begin learning about basic addition and subtraction. Students will learn to model and solve single-step story and picture problems with sums to 10 and differences within 10, using concrete objects.
Science
What We Learned This Past Month:
Students learned about living things and their needs to survive. They also learned about plant and animal life cycles by engaging in and discussing relevant texts to create a class mural!
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Students will begin learning about recycling. Students will learn that materials can be used repeatedly and that everyday materials can be recycled. They will engage in relevant texts and participate in small group / whole group discussions.
Social Studies
What We Learned This Past Month:
Students began to learn about economics - they learned to compare the differences between a need and want.
What We Will Be Learning Next Month:
Students will continue to learn about economics - they will continue to learn and compare the differences between a need and want. Students will compare and contrast simple jobs of the work people do to earn money.
