Baby Pictures for 6th Grade Bulletin Board

bulletin board display

Families,

We are collecting baby pictures of all 6th graders to celebrate their final year at Timber Lane Elementary. Please help us ensure all students are represented by sending us a baby picture of your child.  Pictures can be sent to [email protected]  Please include your child’s name in the email so we know whose picture it is.

Language Arts

What we learned this past month:

Students have been immersing in Historical Fiction this month. They have been reading books and creating their own writing based on a time period of their choice!

  • Readers of historical fiction intentionally expand their knowledge of a time period so that they can more completely understand the story (characters, setting, events) and deepen their interpretations.
  • Readers of historical fiction evaluate theories about universal themes that transcend time and place and consider their relevance in their lives today.
  • Writers develop the conflict by placing true-to-life characters into a historical context.
  • Writers use elaboration techniques (dialogue, character & setting description) to reveal the historical time period.

What we will be learning in next month:

Next month, students will be entering their Content Area Research Unit, where they will conduct research about a social studies/science topic of their choice.

  • Researchers engage in a process of inquiry to ask and seek answers to compelling questions.
  • Researchers synthesize information across multiple texts and experiences in order to construct emerging understandings.
  • Researchers collaborate and discuss to seek new ideas or clarify unresolved questions.

Math

What we learned this past month:

Unit 6: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities

  • To develop an understanding of and fluency with multiplication and division of fractions, decimals and integers.

How does the content emphasis come to life in this unit?

  •  In this unit, students will work with variables, write expressions, solve expressions, solve one-step linear equations and inequalities, and graph inequalities on a number line.

What we will be learning next month:

In unit 7, students build a conceptual understanding of proportional relationships and unit rates:

  • Students make connections between various representations such as verbal descriptions, ratio tables, and graphs.
  • Students will explore proportional relationships in practical situations by using ratio tables.
  • The use of ratio tables is to help students develop a conceptual understanding of the multiplicative relationship of proportions.
  • Students will also visually represent proportional relationships using graphs.
  • The use of tables and graphs builds students' pre-algebra skills as proportional relationships helps develop the understanding of the slope of a line which will be explored further in Mathematics 7.

Advanced Math

What we learned last month:

This past month students learned how to graph and solve linear functions and equations and be able to…

  • Graph points and lines on coordinate planes
  • Determine the slope, m, as rate of change in a proportional relationship between two quantities and write an equation in the form y = mx to represent the relationship
  • Graph a line representing a proportional relationship between two quantities given the slope and an ordered pair, or given the equation in y = mx form
  • Determine the y-intercept, b, in an additive relationship between two quantities

What we will be learning next month:

This next unit will focus on geometry- specifically triangles and quadrilaterals. Students will be able to…

  • Solve problems, including practical problems, involving the relationship between corresponding sides and corresponding angles of similar quadrilaterals and triangles.
  • Compare and contrast quadrilaterals based on their properties
  • Determine unknown side lengths or angle measures of quadrilaterals.
  • Apply translations and reflections of right triangles or rectangles in the coordinate plane.

Social Studies

What we learned last month:

Students learned about the independence of the United States and the creation of the government

  • Explain the outcomes of the first Constitution of the United States.
  • Describe the historical development of the Constitution of the United States.

What we will be learning next month:

Students will be entering the unit of Westward Expansion:

  • Evaluate territorial expansion and how geographic and economic factors influenced the westward movement of settlers.
  • Analyze the cause and effect relationships of westward expansion and its impact on American Indians
